Questions Families Ask Before Their First Trip
If your question is not answered here, call us at +1 (213) 994-3414 or email chen@tillips.com and we will respond within one business day.
1. What ages are your trips designed for?
Our guided family trips are built for children aged 4 to 14, and every route is paced around the youngest child in the group. Children under 3 are welcome at no charge on all packages. For families with toddlers or with members who have limited mobility, we recommend our gentle accessible outings, which keep walking distances short and routes stroller-friendly.
2. Do we need to bring our own equipment?
No. All activity equipment and safety gear is included in every package and is brought, prepared, and carried by your guide. On the Horizon Pass overnight camp, tents, sleeping systems, lighting, and cooking equipment are also provided and set up before your family arrives. You only need to bring personal clothing, comfortable footwear, and personal toiletries.
3. What happens if the weather turns bad?
Every itinerary is built with a verified weather backup. If conditions change, we either switch to the backup location or activity, or we reschedule at no cost to you. If we cancel a trip for safety reasons, you receive a full refund or a free date change. We never push a group into unsafe conditions to protect a booking.
4. Are your guides trained and screened?
Every guide completes our internal outdoor leadership and child supervision program before leading a trip, holds current first aid and CPR training, and passes a background screening. Guides also carry route-specific knowledge for the locations they lead and travel with a group first aid kit, communication devices, and a documented emergency plan.
5. How many families are on a trip?
We keep groups small and personally supervised. Day trips run with a single guide per group, and overnight camps run with a minimum of two guides on site for the full duration. As a rule, each guide is responsible for no more than six children, so supervision stays direct rather than diluted across a crowd.
6. Can you accommodate dietary restrictions and allergies?
Yes. Tell us about allergies, intolerances, and dietary requirements when you book, and we will adjust the meals and snacks provided. We can accommodate vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free, and nut-free requirements as standard. For severe allergies, our guides follow a documented response plan and carry the group's allergy information with them.
7. Do you offer outings for children with special needs or limited mobility?
Yes. Our accessible outings are designed for exactly this situation. We verify surface quality, shade, seating, and stroller or wheelchair suitability before the trip, shorten walking distances, and build in frequent rest points. We also keep every outing flexible so that it can be ended early without anyone feeling the day was wasted.
8. How far in advance should we book?
We recommend booking at least two weeks ahead for a day trip and four weeks ahead for an overnight camp or a custom multi-day plan. Peak weekends in spring and autumn fill earliest. If you have a specific date in mind, contact us and we will confirm availability, including short-notice requests where guide capacity allows.
9. Is transportation to the trip location included?
Transport to the meeting point is not included in our standard packages. We send clear directions and a meeting time when your booking is confirmed, and we choose locations that are reachable within a reasonable drive from Homer, New York. For larger group bookings, we can arrange group transport as a quoted add-on.
10. What is your cancellation and refund policy?
Rescheduling is free up to 72 hours before departure. If you cancel more than 72 hours before departure, you receive a full refund less the 30% deposit. Cancellations inside 72 hours are non-refundable, but you may transfer the booking to another family. If we cancel for weather or safety reasons, you receive a full refund or a free date change, with no deposit withheld.
11. Are restrooms available during the trips?
We plan every route around known restroom access, and your guide will brief the group on facilities at the start of the trip. On longer day trips we build in a scheduled restroom stop. On overnight camps, the campsite includes designated sanitation facilities.
12. Can grandparents and extended family join a trip?
Yes, and we encourage it. Our multi-generational programs are planned so that toddlers through grandparents can share the same itinerary, with shaded rest areas, adjustable walking distances, and transport between stops where needed. For groups larger than eight, we add a second guide so that supervision and support stay consistent.
